  • Kelly Bruno

UPDATE - 09/18/2007 - Click here for an interview with Kelly Bruno!

Kelly Bruno is a very unique and inspiring addition to our roster of sponsored athletes. Her accomplishments alone are impressive in breadth and variety but when you add to them the fact that she is a below-the-knee amputee you truly begin to understand what a dynamic and unique young women she really is.

Kelly suffered from a birth defect that severely deformed her right foot and ankle. As a result, her right leg was amputated just below the knee. She was fitted for her first prosthesis at the tender age of nine months and her innate competitive spirit was on display just a few months later as she began walking!

Her foray into the competitive running arena began in 8th grade with the United States Disabled Sports Team. She was a sprinter running 100-800m races. She has held multiple world records and still holds the 800m world record in her class.

During the off-season Kelly worked on distance running and became a valuable member of her high school distance running team.

During her freshman year at Duke University she incurred a chronic use injury from running. As with many things in her life Kelly turned this seeming negative into a positive as she used the down time from running to try something new, triathlon training. Through a grant from The Challenged Athletes Foundation Kelly was able to procure a bike and soon thereafter enter her first triathlon competition.

Kelly continues to compete and excel at various forms of endurance based athletics and has set her sites on competing in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing with the US Paralympic cycling team.

    Kelly’s World Records:

    • 2002 world record in the T44 class 200m sprint with a time of 32:06
    • T44 world record holder in the 800m run with a time of 2:46:04

    Kelly's Thoughts on AtLarge’s Products:

Note - Kelly sent us this testimonial prior to becoming one of our sponsored athletes.

For my own training and competition I have certainly tried a lot of supplements, protein powders, and types of creatine. As an endurance athlete I need to consume a great deal of protein as my workouts place a tremendous strain on the skeletal muscles of my lower body. The first AtLarge Nutrition product I purchased was chocolate Opticen which I found to be a great change of pace from the mediocre protein powders I had tried before. Its taste was a great impetus for me to consume shakes as often as I should. Once consuming shakes before and after workouts became routine I tried some of the other products that you offer. I am currently using Nitrean and Creatine 500 as my post-workout shake and taking ETS before and after workouts.

I actually just bought a container of strawberry Nitrean and it shot straight to the top of my all-time favorite protein shake list (now you just need to come out with a strawberry Opticen which would make for an even better post-workout shake). The Multi-Plus formula also has a lot to offer an endurance athlete as it contains many of the vitamins and minerals that are needed for an intense workout and maximum recovery.

I like these products and I believe in them. They have helped me recover from a lot of brutal workouts so that I can get back out there the next day to do it again. They have helped me to optimize my body for a sport that demands optimization, efficiency and strength. I like your company, specifically your no-bullshit attitude towards supplements. You sell what works and I like using what works to get results.
