Katie Petersen is an NPC Figure Competitor in Chicago, where she also works as a personal trainer. Fitness has been ingrained in her as long as she can remember. Katie’s early involvement with athletics, from track meets and softball games all the way to cheerleading tournaments, instilled a drive to push her body and mind to excel and reach higher.
Aside from competing, though, she found a certain passion when introduced to weight-lifting her sophomore year of high school. Ten years later, the gym is still a second home to this aspiring athlete.
Katie entered her first NPC bodybuilding and figure competition in April 2008, at the local level. She did not place as well as she hoped; this “loss” increased her intensity for the next year’s training. She put in grueling hours at the gym to gain muscularity in her upper body and eventually lean out the lower body.
Anyone familiar with judging in Figure Competitions knows just how finicky the sport can be, .i.e. you must be muscular, but not too muscular; thin, but not stringy, curvy but not too soft. The goal is “symmetry”, and it’s a constant battle to achieve that balance.
In addition to the right training program, getting the right nutrients at the right times is crucial. Going into the 2009 competition season, she incorporated specific supplement stacks into her diet in order to improve her physique. She emphasizes this simple fact with both herself and her clients: everything we put in our bodies is reflected on the outside. If you want to cut corners, you won’t see the results you want. That’s why it is so important to invest in your body, and feed it what it needs through food and supplementation.
As a result, she not only placed higher in the next couple of shows, she won first place at Illinois State. Katie has now debuted at the national level of NPC competitions and plans to keep moving up the ranks. Her goal is to get a first place win nationally, earning her a pro card to continue competing professionally.
While Katie has created a personal mission in competing, she plans to continue motivating men and women to reach their own physical and life aspirations through her personal training business. She also hopes to get into fitness modeling and extend her influence, spreading the message that “if you set your mind to taking care of your body and putting in the hard work, you WILL reach your goals!”
